Cardiff Airport has been sold to the Welsh government for a total of £52 million, it has been confirmed.
Welsh first minister Carwyn Jones confirmed that the government has purchased the business, but he noted that it will not be operated by the government itself, rather that it will be managed "at arm's length" and "on a commercial basis".
The airport has struggled in recent years with the withdrawal of flights by bmibaby in 2011. Its passenger numbers have been falling, with figures showing just over one million passengers using the facility in 2012, down by around 200,000 on the previous year. This compares poorly to rival airport Bristol, which has seen almost six million passengers in the last year.
Jones confirmed that increasing passenger numbers will be high on the list of priorities for the airport. "Cardiff Airport is a vital gateway to Wales for business, tourists and general travellers alike," he said on Wednesday. "It is essential that its future is secured and that we develop high-quality sustainable services."
Lord Rowe-Beddoe has agreed to serve as chairman of the airport board, but a chief executive is due to be announced in the near future.
