Family-run shoe shop chain DE Shoes has put its outlets on the market in an effort to save the business from the impact of further trading woes on the high street.
Trading for 146 years, Dundee-based DE Shoes has 31 shops across the UK, with over 200 staff.
The retailer said that custom to the shop had risen since its difficulties had been revealed, perhaps in an attempt to offer support for local businesses.
Robert Sinclair, DE Shoes’ managing director, told the BBC that there was a “great opportunity” for willing buyers to rescue the 31 shops. A formal 90-day consultation with employees about the firm’s future was ongoing, he added.
Back in early January it was reported that DE Shoes had taken the step of asking staff to take voluntary redundancy to help reduce its costs.
Mr Sinclair commented at the time, “Retail is going through an incredibly difficult time at the moment. The directors have been continually exploring how we could change the business model to ensure we got back to profitability.”
In regards to the 90-day consultation he said, “Throughout the consultation we’ll still be trading, we’ll still be paying suppliers and, if it does come to any redundancies, every employee will receive what they’re entitled to. We’ll be supporting our employees as much as we can.”
