A Yorkshire-based bakery firm has been put up for sale by its administrators, after buckling under the weight of inflation, rising wheat prices and continued low consumer spending on the high street.
The administrators are continuing to trade the 74-year-old family run business, which includes 30 shops, while seeking a new owner.
Joint administrator Christopher White of P&A Partnership said, “We believe that by continuing to trade we have the best chance of finding a buyer and we have retained as many employees as we possibly can.”
The Scarborough factory makes its products for a total of 30 Woodhead the Bakers shops, including York, Hull, Malton, Beverley and eight in Scarborough. It also supplies to the supermarket chain Morrisons.
Woodhead the Bakers still has 280 of its workforce after 30 were made redundant on the appointment of the administrators. The future of the retained staff is still unclear, however.
It has been suggested that Greggs could be interested in buying the Scarborough outlets as they are looking to expand into the area.
The company, Woodhead (Scarborough) Limited, reported a net asset value of just over £1 million for the year ending 31 March 2010. It is headed by directors Colin Woodhead, Laraine Woodhead and Philip Davis.
