The Main family’s Haddington-based saddlers, which has been in business for more than 100 years, will soon close its doors forever, reports the East Lothian Courier.
JS Main and Sons, which is located on the High Street of Haddington, has operated within the Scottish town for more than a century and has been in its current building since as far back as 1926. Before that, the business operated out of premises on Market Street and St Anne’s Place.
John Main, the owner, has been working at the East Lothian store for 45 years, but is now looking to sell the shop and retire. Mr Main said: “I’ve enjoyed it over the years and had a good relationship with the customers.
“It is just something I’ve really enjoyed and it has just come to the point where I feel it is time to hand over to someone with a bit more energy.”
The company began when Mr Main’s grandfather took over the business from another saddler. The company mainly made harnesses for horses, but had to diversify into tools and hardware in the late 1940s after farms became ever-more mechanised and horse-riding declined up and down the country.
Mr Main, who is 62, hopes to sell the shop on Haddington High Street by the end of the summer, so he can retire, spend time with his wife Moira and see more of his three children.
