The owners of Isle of Wight football club, Newport FC, are hoping to persuade supermarket giant, Asda, to buy the club’s ground for the location of their planned new store on the island, and then use the money from the sale to relocate the club.
Asda has already submitted a planning application to build a store next to the club’s ground, St George’s Park, but owners, South Coast Leisure (SCL) have said that if the current plans are given the go ahead then it would be impossible for the club to stay at the site.
They have claimed that by buying the club’s home ground, Asda could build a bigger store and £1 million made from the sale would be able to cover the relocation of the club to a new facility.
The Newport Football Club Supporters' Trust have told the Isle of Wight County Times that they will make sure to protect the future of the club, whatever the outcome of the dealings between Asda and SCL, which bought the park from administrators in 2004.
“The recent proposal and speculation as to where the club will play in the future will become clear in time,” the Trust told the newspaper. “It is quite possible we could remain at St Georges Park, our home for a quarter of a century. If however we are forced into a move, the trust will ensure any decisions made will be with the future security of the club as a priority.”
