An unusual business for sale opportunity has arisen in Herefordshire with the sale of the toll bridge at Whitney-on-Wye.
The bridge was built in 1797 and has been operating under an Act of Parliament that exempts the income made on the toll from tax. It is listed as for sale for £850,000 and includes around two acres of land as well as the bridge and associated business.
Grahame Penny and Maggie Taylor are the current owners but they are selling the business and their cottage after building up the business for three and a half years. They have said that their reason for selling is that they would like to take a holiday.
Ms Taylor commented: “We bought the business when it was struggling during the downturn and have been working 24/7 to build it back up.
“We regard ourselves as custodians of an ancient monument rather than owners, and have concentrated our efforts on the land around the toll bridge to create year-round support to keep the business going.”
She added that the pair have done “all the hard graft” developing the business and are ready to hand it over to a new owner.
The bridge is one of just eight privately-owned toll bridges in the country exempt from tax, making it an unusual and potentially very profitable business.
