Butler Tanner & Dennis Ltd, a printing and bookbinding firm in Somerset, is set to be placed under the control of administrators from 23 May.
The business is a division of Butler Tanner & Dennis Holdings Ltd. The company’s maps division, which shares the same premises, is unaffected by the situation.
The doomed printing business has about 100 staff based at its site in Frome, and it is as yet unclear how many jobs will be lost.
A specialist printer and binder of colour books and brochures, it had printed in monochrome for well over a century until it invested in colour printing technology in 1988. It has capacity for over 400,000 books per week.
Butler Tanner’s directors confirmed their plan to place the company into administration on 13 May, after suffering long-term trading losses and testing market conditions.
The directors’ decision was not made lightly. Its chief executive Gerald White said they had been looking at options for months including lease options with its current premises and scouting around for other premises where it could continue printing.
“We very much regret the impact this will have on our loyal staff and customers ad the community of Frome. The maps operation will continue to trade while the directors consider the future of that business including where the operation can be sited and as a result we hope that some jobs will be preserved,” Mr White told Insolvency News.
The business neared closure in 2008, but was saved in a £500,000 deal by publisher Felix Dennis.
Richard Rones of Thornton Rones is on standby to act as administrator to Butler Tanner & Dennis after court approval, Insolvency News reported.
