S Dudley & Sons, a preferred contractor to build Sainsbury’s supermarkets, is filing for administration, the Construction Enquirer has reported.
The Newport-based supermarket builder has started to sack its staff, after the company directors made a decision to take action and shut the business down after cash flow difficulties resulted in pre-tax losses of £147,000. At its pinnacle in 2011 S Dudley & Sons brought in £92 million in revenue.
S Dudley was a tier one contractor for Sainsbury’s, and also worked for Tesco and Waitrose. Its projects were worth up to £18 million.
When the administrators are brought in it will become clear how many among the 43-strong workforce will be made redundant.
Dudley’s Aluminium, which is a separate operation of S Dudley & Sons set up in 1993, is still running and is unaffected by the business closure.
The directors said they are to trade as usual with the Architectural Aluminium subsidiary, a supplier of shop fronts for clients including Tesco and serving the health, education, commercial, defence and retail sectors. Based in Cardiff, it designs, makes and installs its products.
Established in 1920 S Dudley & Sons held several accreditations and achieved industry recognition for its high quality work.
The managing director, Mike Dudley, told the Construction Enquirer, “The construction sector has been depressed for some time, and pressure on margins has been intense. This has led to S Dudley & Sons becoming unsustainable.
“It has been an incredibly difficult period for us, and we are doing all that we can to help the staff who have unfortunately lost their jobs as a result of the closure of S Dudley & Sons.”
