Newport company Hedon Salads Ltd has been placed in administration, it has been confirmed.
The business is one of the largest fresh produce companies in the UK and supplies products such as cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes to various major supermarkets across the country, including Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco.
It is thought that the business, which grows and packages the salad items, was pushed into administration because it was unable to pay off its creditors.
Director of AlexanderLawsonJacob, Ninoas Koumetteou, commented on the administration: “I was appointed administrator as the company had liabilities that couldn't be paid.
“The company employs about 150 people and we are looking to preserve as many jobs as we can.”
Paul Bell, head of economic development at East Riding Council, told the Hull Daily Mail: "The current economic climate is challenging both the public and private sector.
"The council is disappointed to hear Hedon Salads has gone into administration but is working closely with neighbouring authorities, the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership and the wider business community to provide a robust response and help boost the economy through various initiatives.”
