Mercury FX, the firm behind the special effects on television shows such as Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Being Human and Spooks, is being put through a liquidation process.
Paul Walker and John Sallabank at Harrisons Business Recovery and Insolvency were appointed in February to act as the joint liquidators. The business, which created effects for popular dramas on the BBC and ITV, is to cease trading and is in a creditors' voluntary liquidation.
The firm has an outstanding £31,919 bill to the HMRC for unpaid taxes, as well as £47,165 in unpaid Corporation Tax and £1,200 in unpaid PAYE, all of which appears to have pushed Mercury FX over the edge. These debts partly date back to the year ending 31 March 2010. Other creditors include RBS, which is owed £18,000.
Established in 2004 Mercury FX had been operating under the brand for the past four years, having previously been known as DarkHorse FX for three years and, prior to that as BBC Design Bristol. The business has also worked on numerous projects for the BBC’s Natural History Unit. Projects include Queen of the Savannah, Great Rift, Wild! Sealions and Wild! Elephant death pact.
Craig Higgins, a company director, told Insolvency News, “The company is very small and is part of a bigger industry which is undergoing great pressure from subsidised competition overseas.”
As of 12 March the liquidators' investigations into the business's affairs are ongoing.
