A chain of West Somerset butchers, Gerald David & Sons, has entered administration, with the closure of five shops.
The family run business was established in 1969 and had six shops across West Somerset – two in Minehead, and one in Dulverton, Taunton, Weston-Super-Mare and Cheddar; with three shops in Devon – Topsham, Newton Abbot and Ivybridge. Most of these are now closed, with three shops kept open while the administrators at Kirk Hills work to sell the business.
It is thought that 13 jobs have been lost at the now closed Minehead shop on Park Street, and over 50 staff have been rendered redundant across the business.
The details of the butcher’s move into administration have not been made known as yet. David Kirk at Kirk Hills did tell the County Gazette: “Hopefully we will find a buyer which would mean at least some of the jobs can be saved.”
Locals told the newspaper that they had seen the Dulverton shop being emptied on the weekend, which is now shut as well.
A former employee, who wished to remain unidentified, said: “There were rumours flying around so I messaged one of the family and he messaged back saying that I had been made redundant.
“We can’t get hold of any managers, the phone lines have been pulled down. It’s disgraceful. I suspected something was wrong a while back.”
