Blissful Daze, a wedding dress store in Sheffield’s city centre, has entered administration after being hit by rising costs and competition.
The joint administrators Andy Wood and Chris White of The P&A Partnership were drafted in on 5 March 2014. Subsequently, the business is being closed down and all three members of staff, including founder Carol Gyte, have lost their positions.
The business suffered falling sales due to a new trend for customers to use the shop to try on dresses then head online to make purchases elsewhere. Rising costs of fabric and logistics, as well as increasing wages in China where most of Blissful Daze’s clothing was produced, did not help matters.
The financial pressure was made worse as the business was unable to absorb the rise in VAT on stock prices.
Established in 2006, Blissful Daze sold wedding and occasion wear, and steadily increased in sales over the years with staff numbers rising to five.
Joint administrator Mr Wood commented: “This business has been badly affected by changing consumer habits and the global increase in raw material costs.
“Customers were using Blissful Daze as a showroom to try on dresses and then going online to buy them.”
The situation is yet another example of high street retailers being thwarted by the “internet shopping phenomenon”, leaving Blissful Daze unable to compete.
