The number of businesses in Scotland being pushed into some form of insolvency has increased.
The latest figures from Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB), Scotland's Insolvency Service, showed a 28.7 per cent increase in the number of Scottish registered companies becoming insolvent or entering receivership in the first quarter of 2013 when compared with the previous three-month period.
Between January and March this year a total of 184 notices were recorded. But it is worth noting that while this is an increase of almost a third quarter-on-quarter, it is also a 56.2 per cent decline on the data recorded for the same period in 2012.
The figure breaks down to include one receivership, 103 compulsory liquidations, and 80 creditors' voluntary liquidations. A further 75 members voluntary liquidations were also recorded.
Fergus Ewing, Scottish Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, said that the changes and reforms being put forward in the Bankruptcy and Debt advice (Scotland) Bill will help deal with Scottish insolvencies in a more effective manner in the future.
He said: "The new system will ensure that the rights and needs of those in debt are balanced with the needs of creditors and businesses and that those having to deal with the burden of debt are made aware of the need for appropriate advice."
Furthermore, despite the figure showing a slight rise over the quarter, the number of corporate insolvencies in Scotland remains at one of the lowest rates recorded since the recession struck towards the end of 2008, offering hope that the economy is finally starting to right itself.
