Out of all the articles about business acquisitions to have appeared in the news this week, few will have attracted a readership of teenage girls. But the confirmation that Louis Tomlinson had completed his takeover of Doncaster Rovers will have probably achieved just that.
The One Direction star has joined forces with the club’s former chairman John Ryan to buy his beloved League One side. His first step was to announce the launch of a crowdfunding project that will attempt to raise £2 million to kick-start an upward climb to the dizzying heights of Premier League football.
The singer, 22, has been a lifelong fan of the club and even played a game for their reserve team earlier this year. He has now joined a long list of musicians-turned-sports-team-owners, adding his name to the likes of Elton John, Jay Z and Gene Simmons.
Tomlinson said: “For me, this is all about the football, the community and restoring the excitement and desire to making Doncaster Rovers the most exciting club to play for in Yorkshire. I want to see the Doncaster Rovers supporters get the club the success it deserves.
“I grew up in Doncaster and have felt the love for football run through the town, it’s for that reason that I have a real personal passion to make Doncaster Rovers a success story.”
As a show of the new owners’ commitment to the cause, the Tomlinson Ryan Trust is putting in a six-figure sum as part of the crowdfunding campaign. Unfortunately, as you have to be over 18 to donate, many of Tomlinson’s army of loyal fans will be unable to contribute to the pot.
Last month One Direction were named fourth in the Sunday Times Rich List of young musicians with an estimated fortune of £14 million each. To think, that could pay the average Premier League club’s total wage bill for an entire four weeks.
