The former Welsh Country Foods abattoir at Gaerwen in Wales is to be placed on the market, after its new owners decided it was surplus to their requirements following a review.
The site was closed in April and 325 jobs lost after its former owner Vion sold the site on to 2 Sisters Food Group.
At full capacity, the plant processed 640,000 lambs a year, and is, therefore, the largest of its kind in North Wales. 2 Sisters Food Group also took on Viol’s sister site in Llangefni, which is being used as additional space for its chicken processing work.
“We’ve undertaken a full and detailed internal review of the site and unfortunately it doesn’t meet our future operational requirements,” 2 Sisters Food Group said in a statement. “Therefore, the building will be put up for sale in the next few weeks.”
Paddy McNaught from the Unite union said there had been speculation circulating about the site being put up for sale once more, and hoped that those who had expressed an interest before would take another look.
With the site closed, farmers have been taking their lambs to be processed to Preston in Lancashire or Newtown in Powys, he said.
Should the abattoir reopen, it would bring many jobs to the area, which would “mean a great deal to the people of Anglesey,” McNaught noted.
