Biophysical technology firm Malvern Instruments has expanded its service portfolio with the purchase of the Archimedes particle characterisation system from US-based Affinity Biosensors, and a separate deal to buy MicroCal.
The deals will boost Malvern’s portfolio of analytical services for the biopharmaceutical sector. Malvern Instruments and Affinity Biosensors had been working together for two years prior to the deal, which enabled Malvern to use the technique of resonant mass measurement.
Archimedes is now fully owned by Malvern, along with its product designs, IP and a licence to the underlying MIT patent for the technology within other fields.
Paul Walker, Malvern’s managing director, commented: “Archimedes sits alongside Zetasizer and NanoSight nanoparticle tracking systems, delivering a range of complementary solutions for quantifying early aggregation in bioformulations.”
While the deal to acquire GE Healthcare Life Sciences’ MicroCal business was announced last month and had been subject to regulatory approval.
MicroCal microcalorimeters are now being sold and serviced by Malvern Instruments.
Mr Walker said: ‘MicroCal microcalorimeters are an exciting and important new addition to Malvern’s portfolio that will significantly extend our ability to serve customers working in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical discovery, development and formulation.”
