Stoke on Trent City Council is selling off nine former school sites around the county with ready-made planning permission in place.
Local paper The Sentinel reported that the redundant sites are potentially suitable for housing, but they may also offer commercial property development opportunities..
Cabinet members are expected to approve plans to decommission the buildings as a short-term solution to the issue, before selling them on the with the expectation of raising around £5 million.
A report to the cabinet, seen by the paper, stated: “If the sites are sold on reasonably quickly to a developer, the council will not need to demolish the buildings at all. Developers would carry out this work themselves.”
Included in the properties for sale are The Discovery Academy's north and south sites, which will be empty this September when the schools move across to the Bentilee sites after the summer.
Locals appear keen for the sites to be used for something other than housing as there have been a lot of closures of community services over recent years.
The council has invested £261 million in its Building Schools for the Future programme, which has resulted in a surplus of older buildings that are now being disposed of.
