The New Scotland Yard Metropolitan Police headquarters in Victoria is set to come up for sale as the force looks to cut costs.
The Met is aiming to save £500 million over the next three years. Freeing up the 1960s office block and relocating to a smaller site on the Embankment should cut around £6.5 million a year from police costs.
Craig Mackney, deputy commissioner with the Met, said that the comment location is “an expensive luxury” that will gradually be emptied and vacated.
While the decision to relocate the force has been approved within the force, the proposal to sell the office at New Scotland Yard will need to be approved by the major of London's office, a meeting and decision-making process that will kick off in the final quarter of the year.
John Tully, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, stated that the sale was not something that the police wanted. “It's very regrettable … an iconic building like New Scotland Yard is going to bite the dust,” he remarked, adding that the sale would be like losing the crown jewels.
