A former RAF airbase at Machrihanish has been sold to the local community for £1, it has been confirmed.
The 1,025-acre site has been predominantly empty since the mid-1990s. But the Machrihanish Airbase Community Company now plans to use the site to attract businesses and employment by investing around £1.7 million on infrastructure, with £300,000 to be spent on upgrading the condition of the airbase.
The community plans have been a long time coming with local people initially undertaking a postal ballot back in May 2010 to gather support for a community buyout. The vote received 97 per cent in favour and a deal was finally confirmed this year.
Environment minister Stewart Stevenson announced the plans: "The Machrihanish Airbase Community Company buyout will benefit both the local community and businesses.
"Benefits will include improvements to the water, sewage and electrical infrastructure at the site."
Among the other improvements planned for the site are an upgrade of the site's private sewage and electrical systems, the development of renewable energy and biomass capabilities and the connection of nearly 140 former Ministry of Defence houses and commercial properties to the water supply to bring them back into use.
