The Ston Easton Park Estate, a former country house hotel in Somerset, has been put up for sale. The grade I-listed Palladian mansion, which sits within 28 acres of gardens and grounds, ceased trading as a hotel in 2021 and the estate is being sold with vacant possession.
Joint LPA Fixed Charge Receivers, James Liddiment and Paul Greenhalgh of Kroll Advisory have engaged specialist hotel property adviser Christie & Co to market the property for sale.
The estate, designed in the 1700s by landscape designer Humphrey Repton, is located close to the Mendip Hills AONB. Its formal landscaped gardens are grade-II listed and the estate also features orchards, woodlands, a rear terrace and kitchen gardens.
The property was abandoned and in disrepair by the mid-20th century, before being restored by subsequent owners, a process that was completed following its acquisition by hotelier Peter Smedley in the 1970s.
The property was subsequently converted into a luxurious country house hotel featuring 20 en-suite bedrooms, prior to its closure in 2021.
Ed Bellfield, Regional Director at Christie & Co who is handling the sale, commented: "Ston Easton Park offers an exciting opportunity for a creative, imaginative buyer to become the latest custodian of one of Somerset’s greatest properties. It is rare that a property of this magnitude comes to the open market and considering its location, the estate will offer a buyer potential for a variety of alternative uses, subject to obtaining planning permission."
Alistair Heather, who is marketing the property on behalf of Savills, added: "It is a privilege to represent the sale of one of Somerset’s most impressive and historic country estates. The property offers incredible potential for use commercially or, subject to the necessary consents, reinstated as a residence of considerable grandeur.”
Hotel M&A remained resilient during a difficult 2023 and is expected to recover this year
