A former prison in Gloucester, which has been closed for one year after 222 years, has been placed on the market.
It is thought that about 30 expressions of interest have been received so far in the former HM Prison Gloucester, with a deadline of the end of May for potential buyers to register their interest.
The selling agent says buyers could use the site for residential, office or hotel use, depending on gaining the necessary planning consent.
The 3.5-acre site, which features Grade II-listed parts, is thought to be worth about £1.5 million to £3 million. Despite its great location between the city centre and the Gloucester Docks, some of the more modern parts of the site may need to be torn down, and buyers will have to stomach the idea that bodies are rumoured to be buried there.
Regardless of these restrictions, the bidders are not put off. Littledean Jail’s Crime Through Time Museum owner Andy Jones is interested in using the site as a museum, film set and venue to work with young offenders.
Its history alone could prove a significant draw; previous occupiers of the site, which was once Gloucester Castle, include King Henry III during his reign in the 13th Century. In more recent times, from 1792 to 1939 123 prisoners were executed on-site, while some inmates who had died at the prison are believed to have been buried there.
Following criticism from the Independent Monitoring Board regarding overcrowding, cramped cells and inadequate dining provision in 2007 the prison closed in March 2013.
