A famous hotel in the North of England which welcomed guests such as art critic John Ruskin and biologist Charles Darwin has been put up for sale.
The Waterhead Hotel in Coniston has been marketed by Colliers International, who are acting on behalf of The Post Office Fellowship of Remembrance (POFR), with an asking price of £2 million.
The property, which has been operating as a hotel for more than a century, boasts 24 bedrooms, space for a restaurant and landscaped grounds and gardens that extend over four acres. The hotel also includes a conference and meeting rooms, suitable either for weddings or business events.
Colliers, a specialist commercial property firm, notes that the Lake District’s recent World Heritage Site status is driving demand for properties in the area.
The designation, awarded to the Lake District National Park area in July 2017, has also seen many more tourists and potential customers come to the area, says Julian Troup, Head of UK Hotels Agency at Colliers.
Troup added that he was “delighted” to bring the Waterhead Hotel to the market.
He continued: “It is an established and well-known hotel operating with a healthy trading base. We are anticipating a favourable response to the marketing, particularly bearing in mind it is so rare to see a Lakeland hotel with actual lake frontage coming to the market.
“We have seen significant demand from both domestic and overseas buyers keen to acquire UK provincial hotels and the Lake District continues to be our most productive area of demand. We are already experiencing heightened demand for the Lakes on the back of it recently being designated a UNESCO world heritage site, being one of the UK’s premier tourist destinations.”
The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Coniston Village in the Lake District, with views out over Coniston Water and to the fells beyond it.
