The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) has put three hostels in the Lake District up for sale.
Hostels in Hawshead, Derwentwater and Helvellyn are being sold by the YHA in a move that has concerned locals. The YHA claims the sites need a large amount of investment to keep them running as profitable youth hostels. Sam Littlechild, a spokesperson for the YHA explained, "The Lake District has one of the highest concentrations of hostels in the country so it's important that we maintain a presence here but those sites just aren’t financially viable."
Now, the locals are hoping that whoever buys the sites will continue to run them as youth hostels. Two other local hostels, at Kendal and Grasmere, that were scheduled to be closed by the YHA in October 2011, have found buyers who are keen to run them as businesses.
Cumbria Tourism Chief Executive, Ian Stephens, stated, "We would encourage any private investors recognising an opportunity here to come forward and express their interest as soon as possible."
The hostels help to bring in tourism trade that benefits many other local businesses and there is still plenty of scope for buyers, claim the locals.
