Kelsey has bought The Christmas Magazine from Signature Publishing, it has been confirmed in reports from InPublishing.
The company was reportedly sold to allow Signature to focus on its core portfolio of children's magazines, while allowing the successful publication a chance to expand under new ownership. The spring deal will allow the new owners plenty of time to get the publication in hand before its crucial festive season kicks off.
Meanwhile, Kelsey expects to use the acquisition to grow its portfolio of mainstream titles. The firm's managing director, Mandy Thwaites, commented: “It will enable us to provide a wide-reaching specialist Christmas platform for our advertisers. Alongside the print product we will be engaging readers across a variety of other platforms.”
Ms Thwaite's comments suggest that the company has plans to develop the digital side of the product, perhaps building up a version of the publication for viewing on iPads and other tablets and taking advantage of the shift towards online publishing.
The Christmas Magazine was launched eight years ago by Signature. It has seen growth every year since its first publication and holds the enviable position of being the best-selling magazine of its kind in the country, managing to generate 20 per cent more revenue from newsstand sales than its equivalent competitors.
Danny Morris, managing director at Signature, commented on the divestment: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with Kelsey, a fellow independent publisher, who have the ability to fully explore the commercial opportunities surrounding this highly successful title, while this sale will allow Signature to completely focus on our core portfolio of children’s magazines.”
Specialist media M&A consultancy, Prism Consult, brokered the deal between the two publishing houses.
