An Altrincham-based mystery shopping and compliance auditing company – which counts Manchester United as one of its clients – has been bought by market research business Serve Legal.
Founded in 1989, Storecheckers provides mystery shopping, market research & training programmes across the UK so clients can improve customer service and increase sales. Its customers include Manchester United football club, major retailers such as Pets at Home and Timpson and Blackpool Town Centre.
Mystery shopping is a technique where a company hires individuals to pose as customers and evaluate a business's products, services, and customer experience.
Serve Legal was founded in 2006 by alcohol retailers Ed Heaver and Julian Sargeson after their local authority had found that one of their sites was consistently serving underage people.
Ed and Julian wanted to check the training of their staff, measure their site performance and demonstrate to the authority that they were taking the issue seriously. They couldn't find a company providing a cost-effective service, so they decided to do it themselves.
Now Serve Legal conducts over 200,000 compliance audits in the UK and Ireland every year for clients in the retail and hospitality sectors. It also carries out retail experience audits and responsible gambling audits.
Ed Heaver, chief executive of Serve Legal, said: "Storecheckers has a strong reputation for delivering high-value, in depth operational compliance and mystery shopping insight, and we are thrilled to bring their talent into the Serve Legal family. Together, we will continue to drive innovation and offer enhanced services to our clients."
Jeff Caplan, managing director of Storecheckers, said: "The Storecheckers team is delighted to be joining forces with Serve Legal, the UK leader in compliance and verification audits. We are excited to be part of the future development of Storecheckers under the Serve Legal umbrella, expanding the brilliant services we offer to businesses."
