Fivemiletown Creamery in Co Tyrone could be sold off as the owners mull options after profit losses.
A question mark hangs over the future of the business, one of Ireland’s oldest creameries, which has been churning out high quality dairy products since 1898.
A Fivemiletown Creamery spokesman said: “There are delicate negotiations going on about the future of the business because of difficult trading conditions, losses over a period and issues around the milk pool.”
Two dairy businesses, thought to be Glanbia and Lakeland Dairies, are in the sale talks, according to news reports. Two options are being mooted: Glanbia would buy the milk pool which is spread across Fernanagh and the Clogher Valley and would mean the loss of all 50 jobs, or Lakeland would retain the plant as a going concern.
A meeting for Fivemiletown and Brooksborough Dairy Co-operative Society’s members, including farmers, was held on Tuesday 25th March to hear about the plans. Staff were invited to a meeting the following morning.
It is thought a majority vote of about 75 per cent will be needed to secure either deal.
Fivemiletown Creamery has been a significant employer in the area since its early days, starting out with bottling milk before progressing on to making cheese after demand for doorstep milk delivery dwindled in the 1970s. The creamery created the first Irish blue cheese Ballyblue, and the first smoked brie in Europe, called Ballyoak.
