Long-running bike firm Raleigh has been for sale for some time, but talks now appear to be reaching a conclusion as Dutch rival company Accell is said to be in negotiations with Raleigh to take the 125-year-old business over.
Raleigh employs 430 people around the world, with around 100 design staff based in the UK at its Eastwood, Nottingham base. But many of the bikes are now manufactured in the Far East and the current level of employment is a far cry from the company's peak time after World War II, when Raleigh had around 8,000 staff on its books and was one of the most popular bike firms in Europe.
The company's milestones have included a Tour de France victory in 1980, when Joop Zoetemelk of Holland won the event riding for TI Raleigh Creda, as well as the launch of its iconic eighties bike, the Vektar, which featured a trip meter and FM radio.
Raleigh's sales last year came in at £195 million. Meanwhile, Accell enjoyed a turnover of £525 million in 2011, with the majority of its sales driven by purchasers in the Netherlands and Germany through the Batavus, Hercules and Lapierre brands.
