French drinks giant Rémy Cointreau has revealed its interest in the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay in Scotland.
The business does not currently have any whisky brands in its collection after pulling out of a distribution deal with Famous Grouse-manufacturer Edrington in 2009. It is thought that it could pay up to £25 million for the Islay distillery this year.
Bruichladdich was mothballed in 1995 but reopened in 2001 by a team led by managing director Mark Reynier. The popularity of Scotch in the emerging economies is thought to be what has tempted Rémy to make a move now.
Alan Gray, a respected whisky analyst at Edinburgh-based stockbrokers Sutherlands, commented: “From Rémy’s point of view, it makes sense because they want to expand into whisky. Mark was very much the brainchild behind Bruichladdich; he and Simon Coughlin got it off the ground, along with Jim McEwan.
“It’s been a success story and, if the deal comes to pass, there’s no doubt the investors will have done very well out of it, whatever price they get.”
Meanwhile, Mr Reynier told the Scotsman that talks with the French business are at a “fairly-advanced” stage, although he added that there are “mixed emotions” about the potential takeover at Bruichladdich.
