Dairy giant Müller has purchased Shropshire creamery Minsterley in a £4.3 million deal.
The purchase will see Müller take over the 26 acre plant in January 2013. Workers at the plant will be retained, while the range of products is expected to be extended in the near future.
Graeme Jack, corporate communications director at Müller, commented on the purchase: “We are purchasing the site with the intention of growing our presence in the chilled desserts market, and that should lead to opportunities at the site in the future. It’s a positive move not just for Muller but for the people that work in Minsterley.”
Indeed, the creamery was forced to lay off 350 jobs when its current owners Uniq scaled back operations at the plant. The Müller deal should prevent further job losses.
Minsterley's creamery dates back to the early 1900s. It initially employed just four people but was later expanded to include various different dairy products. By the 1950s, when it was bought out by Independent Dairies, the site employed more than 100 people and covered around ten acres and has continued to grow in the following decades.
Earlier this year Müller bought milk producer Robert Wiseman Dairies, expanding its stake in the industry. Robert Wiseman is based in Worcestershire.
