John Good Group has acquired a shipping services provider that operates from the ports of Grimsby and Immingham. The group has acquired Arthur Smith (Grimsby) Limited through its subsidiary DAN Shipping & Chartering Limited and plans to integrate the company into its maritime division.
Arthur Smith (Grimsby) has been operating since 1936 and provides port agent, freight forwarding, customs clearance, logistics, haulage and storage services. The company handles products including timber and fresh and frozen food, as well as providing offshore services for the oil and gas industry and wind farm and construction projects.
Adam Walsh, chief executive at John Good Group, commented: "This acquisition brings expansion in our Maritime Division both in the quality of people and business, but also a strategic move to enter the offshore and renewables markets.”
Following the acquisition, the business will be integrated into John Good Group’s maritime division DAN Shipping & Chartering Limited, alongside DAN Shipping and Bay Shipping, with the business continuing to be led by David and James Smith.
Dan Shipping and Bay Shipping are both independent port agents. Bay Shipping was founded in Wales in 1992, while Dan Shipping was established in Hull in 1987. The combined businesses provide port agency and chartering services nationwide and collectively handle more than 10 million tonnes of cargo each year for a range of clients.
Arthur Smith (Grimsby) and John Good Group are both long-standing family businesses, something that Adam Walsh mentioned as a key upside of the deal. Walsh commented: “Family businesses, with all the heritage and values that go with them, are things to be cherished and I’m delighted to be welcoming the Smiths into our business and look forward to working with them to build a business for the future.”
Arthur Smith (Grimsby) director David Smith said: "Joining with DAN Shipping opens a new chapter for us. It's an opportunity to blend our expertise in offshore and renewables work with Dan Shipping's longstanding reputation for service and John Good's significant backing and areas of expertise in marketing, finance and HR."
