It has been suggested that Cardiff Airport could be for sale before long if it fails to organise its affairs and set itself up for a more profitable future.
Speaking on BBC Wales' Week In Week Out programme, Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones, urged the airport's owners to invest in its future or put it up for sale.
He criticised the owners, Abertis, for delays in implementing a £26 million investment and suggested that the poor state of the airport is giving a bad impression of Wales to visitors. His suggestions are backed up by figures which show that the airport has lost nearly 800,000 passengers since its peak in 2007.
Martin Evans, an aviation expert, told the BBC that the government itself needs to look into a suitable strategy for the airport. He said: "We need to ask fundamental questions of what do we want from our airport, and once that is decided, we've all got to be told so we know what to expect.
"We could go back over years and years of poor strategic choices but that won't really help us where we are in the current situation."
Abertis has stated that it has no plans to sell the airport and that it would be open to offers from interested parties.
