Two famous Norwich buildings are to be sold at auction later this month.
Samson and Hercules House in Tombland, opposite Norwich's cathedral gates, is to be sold by local chartered surveyors Arnolds, along with Old Bank of England Court, in Queen Street.
Samson and Hercules House was originally built in 1657 by the Mayor of Norwich Christopher Jay. It operated as a ballroom during the 1950s before becoming Ritzy's nightclub, after which it was renamed Ikon and then the Fifth Avenue nightclub.
The 3,700 sq. ft. commercial premises has planning permission for a restaurant or cafe to be built in its ground floor and basement. It could also be used as commercial offices.
The upper floors of the commercial property have already been converted into residential accommodation, with its main entrance flanked by Norwich's famed statues of Samson and Hercules. The building has a guide price of between £150,000 and £175,000.
The other commercial property to be sold is Norwich's most historic office building, Old Bank of England Court. The 3,480 sq. ft. of office space stretches over three floors and a basement, and has been occupied for over 50 years by property and business consultants Brown & Co. The office building has a guide price of between £225,000 and £245,000.
Craig Knights, Arnolds' auction manager, told the Norwich Evening News, “These are two landmark buildings in Norwich. Samson & Hercules House has to be one of the most recognisable properties in the city, and the successful bidder will become proud owners of the two famous statues either side of the impressive entrance."
“Old Bank of England Court is a historic office building in a lovely, quiet setting in the heart of the city’s professional district, offering a rare freehold opportunity combined with a rich heritage. We expect bidding to be brisk for both of these landmark properties,” he added.
The sale of the two properties will take place at The Maids Head Hotel in Tombland, Norwich, on 24 June.
