A pub in Cornwall, the Jamaica Inn, is up for sale with an asking price of around £2 million.
Known for the name it shares with the Daphne du Maurier novel, the inn is located near Bodmin. Its current owners, John and Wendy Watts, have owned the business for the last 40 years but are now looking to retire.
The business operates as a small hotel, as well as a pub serving drinks and food.
Matthew Smith, director of Christie and Co in Exeter, who is handling the sale, commented: “The family which has owned Jamaica Inn since 1973 are now looking to retire.
“Given the history, the location and the trading records, we anticipate a great deal of interest.”
Jamaica Inn has a rich history. Originally constructed in 1750, the building served as a coaching inn for travellers using the turnpike between nearby Bodmin and Launceston. Smugglers are thought to have used the location to hide contraband, with rumours suggesting that the name came about as a result of the inn's trade in rum.
The inn is known for being where Daphne du Maurier stayed while writing her novel 'Jamaica Inn'. The pub still has the original writing desk used by the author and a number of her personal possessions following her stay at the establishment in 1930.
