Simpsons Golf Shop, which sits on one of the world’s most renowned golf courses at Carnoutsie in Scotland, has sparked a flurry of interest from potential buyers after being put up for sale.
The recognisable building – which has a prime trading location directly opposite the 18th hole of the Championship golf course – was put up for sale last week, according to the Arbroath Guide and Gazette. Agents from J & E Shepherd have been inviting potential offers.
Commercial specialist at Shepherds, Gavin Russell, said that the shop was being sold as a going concern, with a long and successful history behind it, dating back to 1883.
“It’s one of these positive stories,” he said. “It’s a unique property and a business. We’re expecting interest from local businesses and golfing enthusiasts.”
The shop was first set up in 1883 by the club-maker Robert Simpson, who was the head professional, club and ball maker, instructor and greens keeper for the Dalhousie Golf Club. He worked extensively on the redesign of the Carnoutsie links and moved the retail business to its current location in 1920, where it has remained ever since.
The building underwent full refurbishment in 2009, but the sale will not include stock, fixtures or fittings.
Mr Russell added, “The sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire and expand a well-established business, rich with golfing folklore, with a well-established client base and tremendous potential.”
