Bladnoch whiskey distillery in Scotland is seeking a buyer to save it from permanent closure, it has been announced this week.
Bladnoch is the most southern distillery in Scotland. It is owned by Co-ordinated Development Services, a Northern Irish firm that went into liquidation last week, and now the distiller is up for sale 20 years after it went through a similar experience.
In 1994 Raymond Armstrong, a businessman and whiskey enthusiast, bought the distillery when he noticed it had been mothballed by its then owners – United Distillers – which had closed a year earlier. Mr Armstrong spent six years restoring the plant and it began making whiskey again in 2000. It has since become a popular tourist attraction with a visitor shop and guided tours.
However as the parent company called the liquidators in last week, the decision has been made to sell the distillery.
Accountants Ernst & Young have been appointed to sell Bladnoch as a going concern. It is hoped that the distillery, which dates back almost 200 years, will be sold so that production can recommence and the employees – of which there are fewer than 10 – will keep their jobs.
Mr Armstrong said: "I'm very sad about the way it has all ended, we didn't want to sell. My wife and I have enjoyed our Scottish adventure. It has been a great challenge but we have enjoyed it.
"The staff are naturally worried about their jobs but they are a great and dedicated workforce and I see no reason why new owners wouldn't keep them on. The company is profitable so I'm sure someone will want to buy it."
