Waste management giant Biffa has acquired Hampshire-based construction and demolition (C&D) waste operator L&S Waste Management. The deal reflects Biffa’s strategy of growing the low carbon recycling solutions it offers to local authority and industrial customers across the UK.
Established in 1997, L&S Waste Management serves urban areas across the South Coast, including Portsmouth, Southampton, Chichester and Fareham. The company has developed into a well-established brand and will continue to trade as L&S Waste Management following the acquisition.
The company’s core waste management business includes C&D material recycling facilities in Portsmouth and Southampton. These two facilities have a combined annual capacity of 225,000. The company also operates a transfer station in Fareham and has a fleet of 91 collection vehicles.
Biffa operates existing C&D processing facilities in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Newcastle and Birmingham.
As well as bolstering Biffa’s low carbon recycling solutions offering, the deal also reflects the firm’s strategy of increasing the volume of recycled products available to the UK construction industry.
Biffa Managing Director, Construction and Demolition, Marc Angell commented: “Biffa is the largest collector of waste and recycling in the UK and the addition of L&S’ capability in the C&D sector will further strengthen our services in this important market.”
“We look forward to working together to leverage Biffa’s unique position at the heart of the circular economy, enabling more customers to meet their carbon reduction commitments.”
L&S Waste Management Managing Director Mick Balch added: “The sale of the business to Biffa heralds an exciting new chapter in the proud history of L&S.”
“New and existing customers will continue to be serviced by the L&S brand and by the same team who are committed to providing the most sustainable service possible, while also being able to draw on Biffa’s extensive pool of resources and expertise.”
