One of the best-known hotels in the Irish hospitality industry, the Belfast-based Portaferry Hotel, has been acquired by the Beannchor Group.
Hotelier Bill Wolsey, owner of The Beannchor Group – which already owns 51 commercial premises including The Merchant in Belfast city centre - plans to invest heavily in its new acquisition.
A full £100,000 refurbishment and renovation is planned for the 14-bedroom seafront hotel, which was previously owned by John Herlihy, the former President of the NI Hotels & Caterers Association, who sold to the Belfast-based Jewell Group in 2007. Jewell then sold the hotel on to Mar Properties.
In May of this year, Mr Wolsey began a strategic acquisition process that saw his Beannchor Group buy 15 pubs from Mar Properties, according to 4NI.co.uk.
The pubs, all of which were located in Country Down, included the Hillside in Hillsborough, the Groomsport Inn and its sister pub The Stables, Lisbarnett House near Lisbane and the Esplanade in Ballyholme, Bangor.
The recent purchase of the Portaferry Hotel completes this year's series of acquisitions for the group. The Beannchor Group also owns The Leighinmohr Hotel in Ballymena and the Cloth Ear bar in Belfast.
