Administrators have been called in to find a buyer for York’s Judges Lodgings Hotel, after it fell into administration.
The popular boutique hotel has been unable to generate enough business to sustain itself since a comprehensive recent refurbishment. Andy Clay and Rob Sadler of Begbies Traynor will be managing the administration and sale process.
The 13-bedroom hotel is located in a Grade I-listed Georgian town house in heart of York, which dates back to 1710. It served as the official residence of the Assize Court Judges from 1806 all the way through to the 1970s, when it was converted into a hotel.
The administrators are keeping the hotel trading until a buyer is found, although they have shut the Cellar Bar pub that operates from the downstairs of the building.
Mr Clay said the some redundancies had been made prior to their appointment, but they hope to be able to save the remaining jobs.
He explained, "Unfortunately, following its recent refurbishment, the Judges Lodgings experienced poor trading due to the economic conditions affecting the leisure and hotel sector."
"The hotel has an excellent location in a historic building in the heart of the city and we expect it to generate a high level of interest which we anticipate will result in securing a future for one of York's premier hotels,” Mr Clay added.
