Nylon stocking maker Nimbus Sales Ltd has been placed in the hands of administrator Philip Lyon of Mazars as the historic garment falls out of fashion.
Mr Lyon is to manage the affairs of Nimbus Sales Ltd and its sister firm GD (GB) Ltd, which both operated from a factory in Somercotes, Derbyshire.
The business used traditional Reading machines from the Aristoc manufacturing site in Belper to make the old-style stockings. A popular gift from US soldiers to British women during the Second World War, Nimbus’ nylon stockings are sold under the Gio brand.
Nimbus Sales is to continue to run while remaining stocks are sold off, the sister firms will subsequently be wound down.
The undergarment famously had a boom in sales when the war ended in 1945 with customers buying out retailer Macy’s stock of 50,000 pairs within six hours. The introduction of tights in the 1970s has led to a gradual decline in sales of stockings.
Mr Lyon told Insider Media, “It is a sad day. The company simply could not make them for the price people were prepared to pay.”
