Troubled art venue The Arches in Glasgow has entered administration following the loss of its late night licence.
The Arches board said that sadly there was “no other choice” for the company after revenue fell by over 50 per cent following the removal of the licence.
Glasgow's Licensing Board voted to remove the licence as a result of police complaints about drug abuse and disorder. However, the decision was not well received in the city and a petition has already been signed by some 40,000 people calling for the licence to be reinstated.
A further group of creative voices, including members of Franz Ferdinand and Belle & Sebastian, as well as author Irvine Welsh, has signed an open letter to the Scottish government urging them to ensure that the Arches remains an arts venue.
The Arches issued a statement in the wake of the administration, reported by the BBC: “Following a meeting of The Arches board of directors, and having taken due legal advice, the decision was taken today to start the process of appointing administrators for both Arches Theatre and Arches Retail Company Limited.”
It added that without the income generated from the venue's “very successful and popular programme of club nights” the company's “business model is untenable”.
