The company that runs a chain of popular diners that serve both steak and lobster has been placed into administration, placing the future of its four restaurants into doubt.
Bourgee Restaurants, which has three restaurants in Essex, a fourth in Bury St Edmunds and two further venues on the way in Norwich and Colchester, appointed Mark Upton and David Scrivener of Ensors Accounts as administrators on 10 April.
Though no official news has been shared by the restaurant group, its owners or administrators, the firm’s original, flagship location on Southend’s seafront suddenly closed last week. A note on its door said it would be “closed until further notice”, while enquiries made to the company’s email account suggest that the restaurant could reopen under new ownership.
The email read: “Thank you for your email, Bourgee Southend is currently closed but will reopen shortly under new management. If you have an enquiry please contact enquiries@onerestaurantandlounge.co.uk.”
Other locations - as well as the firm’s “Bites-Bar-Luxe Lounge” in Southend Airport - remain open.
As Bourgee Restaurants is only part of the whole group of companies that manage Bourgee locations, it is unclear as yet how the administration will affect the other restaurants across the group.
A request for information from Bourgee’s director James Welling, who co-founded the firm along with chef Mark Baumann in 2014, was met with a statement saying more information about the administration would be sent out once it had been overseen by company lawyers.
Administrators at Ensors send they were also waiting for a copy of the same statement.
Bourgee’s Southend restaurant was the first the company launched, with an aim to deliver “affordable luxury” to local customers. The £1 million venue was considered a flagship example for a UK-wide chain of restaurants, where UK lobster and beef from Spain was cooked on enormous, bespoke grills.
