McArdle, the ground engineering and earthworks specialist, has been placed into administration.
The Construction Enquirer has reported that the administrators are now managing the business from its head office in Berkshire, shortly after being appointed.
McArdle is the largest of its kind in the UK, and has been in operation for over 40 years, having expanded its services from its original haulage-focused business. Well known, it has been seen working on numerous sites across Britain, and has over 100 staff.
An unnamed industry source told the Enquirer, “It’s a major shock that such a famous name has been hit like this.”
The business mainly works for the services and building/construction sectors. It offers materials and waste recycling, haulage and transport and construction plant to the services sector. For the building industry it works on sporting facilities, airports and railways and contaminated land remediation, as well as providing other services.
McArdle’s recent large projects have included the Olympics, Berkeley Homes developments throughout London and M25 widening work for Balfour Beatty/Skanska.
The business recorded sales of £62 million with an operating profit of £2 million.
It has not been revealed who the administrators are as yet.
