North Wales hotel and leisure chain, Llangollen Hotels, is facing administration, after HMRC issued a winding-up petition.
Some of the premises in the company's portfolio, which is owned by multi-millionaire Stephanie Booth, closed yesterday upon the news of the petition. A number of hotels remained open, however, with prospects of being sold on as continuing businesses by the administrators.
Wrexham's Wynnstay Arms was shut yesterday morning and workers told they were facing redundancy, as were the company's Fantastic Fun House children's entertainment establishments in Wrexham and Mold.
The rest of the company's hotels and premises - including Bryn Howel, Wild Pheasant, Chainbridge, Bodidris Hall, and Castle and Anchor, as well as Oswestry's McLarens leisure complex - all remained open for business. Administrators from KPMG are expected to be appointed today and are likely to begin a search for new owners for the various properties.
A statement from Llangollen Hotels said that the petition had "necessitated the immediate closure of leased premises as a default on rent is unavoidable." The company added that the staff affected by redundancies would be contacted by KPMG to inform them of their entitlements.
Wrexham council's Corporate Governance representative, Rodney Skelland, said they were "saddened" by the news of the situation. He said, "We shall continue to work to try and get the best result for both the staff and for Wrexham."
