Carpet manufacturer Dutton Carpets has entered administration, shortly after HM Revenue and Customs put in a request for it to be wound up due to unpaid tax bills.
Christopher Ratten and Jeremy Woodside of RSM Tenon have been called in to act as administrator and are now on the hunt for a buyer, while union leaders fight to prevent job losses at the Lancashire-based firm.
Dutton's recorded accounts reveal a recent history of financial strife; it made pre-tax losses of £311,000 for the year to March 31 2009, down from £321,000 for the same period in 2008. In addition, £585,000 was owed in taxes and social security.
Of the firm, administrator Mr Ratten said, "Dutton Carpets is a productive, viable and important business in the Blackburn and Darwen area, and it still has a bright future if the right buyer can be found."
The demise of the company has inspired local MPs to help. Damien Talbot, who represents Mill Hill on Blackburn with Darwen Council, commented: "Dutton Carpets in an important employer in the area so I would be extremely concerned about losing that company."
"If I can do anything to help I will."
Established in 1979, Dutton considers itself to be the biggest "independent commission manufacturer of carpet and carpet products" in Britain. It employs 120 people.
