John Woods Nurseries has entered administration, with plans already in place to try and sell some of the business' assets.
The East Anglia-based wholesale nursery is putting more than £500,000 of container-grown trees, shrubs and a range of other plants up for sale at an auction on 24 November. It follows news that Begbies Traynor of Southend had been appointed as administrators to the company last week, with around 20 jobs already believed to have been lost as the business was immediately shut down.
John Woods Nurseries has a turnover of £6 million. It was formed in 2007 following a management buyout (MBO) from Notcutts Nursery, one of the UK’s top five commercial garden centre suppliers.
According to Horticulture Week, the nursery owns a range of different plants, including: the important National Collection of hibiscus plants, recognised by the plant heritage organisation; the National Council for the Protection of Plants and Gardens; and a collection of very mature original ericaceous species, such as rhododendrons and azaleas, from the Waterers Nursery.
Trading conditions had been difficult for the company for a number of years; in November last year the firm announced a restructuring and creditors voluntary arrangement (CVA).
Having entered administration earlier this month, next week's sale, which is being overseen by chartered surveyor Eddisons, will aim to recover as much money for the business as possible.
Kevin McAndrew, director of machinery and business assets at Eddisons, commented: "It's really sad to see a company like John Woods, which has such a proud heritage in plant growing and gardening being brought down by financial problems.
"The lots that we are auctioning next week will be an opportunity for trade buyers and individuals to pick up some fantastic plants and other items from right across the nurseries’ vast product range."
