Jersey-based Control Centre General Partner Limited has called in administrators to handle its assets.
The firm owns five regional fire control centres around the UK. These are now in the hands of receivers Jones Lang LaSalle, along with all other "property, assets and rights of whatever nature", a letter from lawyers Mourant Ozannes, seen by the Express and Star, confirmed.
Among the businesses owned by Control Centre General Partner Limited is a scrapped £10 million fire control centre in the West Midlands that has been the centre of some controversy. The property's 20-year lease is being covered by taxpayers at the moment at a rate of £1.4 million a year, despite the fact that it is standing empty.
The building was scrapped after plans laid down in 2004 by former Labour deputy prime minister John Prescott to create nine regional control centres were scrapped in 2010. Five of the remaining centres are now used for other purposes.
Gavin Williamson, Conservative MP for South Staffordshire, told the paper: “The fact the company which owned the freehold has gone into receivership may offer a way out of the lease and should be explored.”
