Travel agency Sun4U has entered administration in the aftermath of the failure of one of its main tour operators, Goldtrail, in mid-July.
The agency explained that it had experienced losses due to the recent volcanic ash episode, which grounded flights in and around the UK for days, as well as due to Goldtrail’s demise.
The collapse has affected 1,200 customers who are stranded abroad, mostly in Spain.
The appointed administrators at London-based Antony Batty have made 90 out of a total of 92 Sun4U employees redundant.
ATOL-protected customers will be able to continue with their holidays and will be able to claim compensation for any losses experienced, according to ABTA – The Travel Association. Those who paid through non-ATOL agencies are being asked to pay again or leave.
Sun4U, which also traded under several brand names including Single Parent Holiday Savers and Costa Brava Breakaways, was set up in 2004. Its revenues jumped from £1.85 million for the year to 31 January 2008 to £3.387 million for the same period the following year.
Sun4U specialised in holidays on the Spanish coast and Majorca. It advertised an all-inclusive package offering “much greater choice and greater flexibility”, on its website Sun4Udirect.com.
The failure of Birmingham-based Sun4U has sparked concerns that other travel agencies might follow suit because of poor trading conditions in the industry.
