Heart of Midlothian Football Club has a week to pay a tax bill to HM Revenue and Customs or risk liquidation.
The Scottish Premier League club has had two similar winding-up orders placed against it in 2009 and 2010 over unpaid tax bills to HMRC. Both times the matter was resolved when the club paid the overdue bills.
It had to pay £500,000 to avoid a winding-up petition over unpaid tax to HMRC late last year.
Heart of Midlothian is based in Edinburgh and owned by Lithuanian Vladimir Romanov.
The club has also had problems with paying its players on time. January was the first time in four months the players were given their wages at the expected time.
Hearts said in a statement: “We are confident that the relevant matter involving HMRC will be resolved in the very near future and no action as specified in the public notice will be necessary.”
Tax partner at BDO LLP, John Cairns commented on the situation to the BBC, “I think that clubs generally are in a pretty perilous position – their cash flow is quite tight and being very carefully managed.”
“With Hearts in particular, with them perhaps struggling to pay their players’ wages, they have got to be struggling, as well, with paying their tax liabilities.”
