An independent school in Westcliff has been forced to close its doors to students as it prepares to enter liquidation.
St Hilda’s School in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, told all staff and students on the last day of the school year that it would not be reopening after the summer holidays. The school’s directors said that an abundance of private school places in the region meant that competition was too high for it to reach the student numbers and fees it required to remain in operation.
The 90-pupil establishment first opened in January 1947 and directors said they reluctantly accepted the closure “with very heavy hearts”. Meanwhile, according to the BBC, some parents have said they had no prior warning that the school was entering liquidation before it made a post on its Facebook page on Thursday 10 July.
St Hilda’s offers education for boys and girls aged between three and 11, with high school education available for just girls beyond that. It will enter liquidation at the end of the month.
DKF Insolvency Ltd will assist the Essex school in the liquidation process. Darren Wilson from the firm said that all of the teachers and other staff would receive redundancy pay.
He added: "The company was formed in 1947, and many teachers had been there for many years.
"It was a family atmosphere. Quite a few tears were shed when the news came out."
