Construction work at two Essex schools has been suspended after the lead building company went into administration.
Dorval Construction Ltd, based in Tolleshunt Knights, near Maldon, called in administrators, PFK, this week, with the loss of 19 jobs. Company bosses have said it has been a victim of the current construction climate and the slashing of public spending.
The building contractors had been in business for more than 23 years, covering Suffolk, North East London and Essex. The company's director, Robert Vallis, said that the administrators had chosen not to work on any existing contracts.
Maldon Council chairman, Robert Long, said it was a sad blow to the area's job market. "We deeply regret any loss of company in our area. But what worries me and the council is the employees and the loss of jobs," he said, adding that he hope the affected staff would be able to find further employment very soon.
Joint administrator at PKF David Merrygold made the stark comment that Dorval had, "no future, which is typical of the construction industry at the moment."
The schools affected were Newport Free Grammar School in Saffron Walden and Alton Park Primary Schoolin Clacton-on-Sea. The company had six projects on its books, including two homes, a bakery, an alms house and two schools. Architects at the school projects will need to ensure all work is finished off by another firm.
